Biography - Dr. Sirish L. Shah

Sirish L. Shah, Ph.D. (Alberta), P.Eng., Professor and NSERC-Matrikon-ASRA Senior Industrial Research Chair in Computer Process Control

Research Areas: Computer Process Control, Process Automation and Monitoring plus Performance Assessment, System Identification

Dr. Shah's research interests lie in the broad area of advanced process control algorithms and methods for monitoring process and controller performance.

Specifically, the focus of Dr. Shah's more recent research activity has been in the area of multivariate statistical analysis of plant data for control loop performance assessment, process monitoring, fault diagnosis, and development of new control-relevant identification algorithms for use in the design of model-based predictive controllers.

Overall the main contributions of some of the recent research projects have been:

  • Development of a new multivariate, control-loop performance assessment software.
  • Use of new multivariate statistical analysis techniques for process monitoring, system identification, fault diagnostics and controller synthesis.
  • Provision of theoretical and experimental tuning guidelines to enhance the robustness of the on-line identification and control techniques.
  • Development, evaluation and implementation of constrained multivariable adaptive controllers based on the LRPC framework including applications in the biomedical and biochemical areas.

Dr. Shah was also the Chair of the NOC for the IFAC Adchem meeting held in Banff, Alberta during June of 1997.
